Sooke and Vancouver Island, British ColumbiaExperience all the exhilarating activities Sooke has to offer. Take a fishing or whale watching charter - two of them are located only a block away. Catch some waves surfing at Jordan River. Go swimming in the river at the Sooke Potholes or in the warmer waters of Matheson Lake. And whether you kayak or canoe, Whiffen Spit Beach Cottage is the perfect launch point with a low bank walk-on beach. For a more relaxed vacation, take an afternoon tea in the sunroom or the garden gazebo, or take your dog for a stroll on Whiffen Spit, a dog-friendly off-leash area. Explore the local Sooke art galleries and artisan studios. Rent a bike and cycle the Galloping Goose Trail, and old railbed-turned-park trail. Get a taste of great local dining. A walk across the road takes you to the doorstep of world famous Sooke Harbour House, where the chefs cook a gourmet meal made entirely of local ingredients. (Advance reservations are recommended). Marcus' Wharfside Restaurant is great also! The wild west coast of Vancouver Island can be further explored by driving west from Sooke on West Coast Road. Explore the beaches and trails of French, China, and Botanical Beaches, and reach the road's end in Port Renfrew, the starting point for the challenging West Coast Trail. (Advance bookings are required by the BC Parks service in the summer months). Or go the other direction to the beaches and trails of East Sooke Regional Park. Beyond Sooke, day trips take you to British Columbia's capital city, Victoria. Notoriously named the City of Gardens, you can see some amazing horticultural feats at Butchart Gardens or Hatley Castle and Park. Or drive further up island to Duncan, the City of Totems, or Chemanius, the City of Murals. |
